Ray watched as Brett explained the situation to the secretary, almost smiling at the boy’s concern for his cat. It was endearing, really. They were told they could head into the waiting room and Ray started walking, stopping abruptly when Brett grabbed his hand. He look down, biting his lip and continuing their walk. That was just the kind of thing Brett did, right? He was really… innocent. Child-like. So it probably just meant he was scared for Lady Tubbington, right? Besides, it wasn’t… bad. It felt… right. He bit his lip, gripping Brett’s hand a little tighter. He didn’t… like Brett, did he? He couldn’t falling for him, right? There was no way. After everything with Santiago…
But, Ray felt different around Brett. Happier. Maybe… maybe he was falling for him. And that was okay; Brett was a great guy. But no one ever fell for Ray. So it was pretty hopeless.
Ray looked at the other boy as they sat, his hand still intertwined with the blonde’s. “I’m sure she’s fine.” He said, patting the top of Brett’s hand with his free one. “I’m sure of it.”
Brett smiled brightly at his friend. “I know she’ll be fine… I hope the babies aren’t ugly though; that would mean that someone’s called Lady Tubbington ugly. You know that saying: Ugly parents have ugly kids? Yeah,” Brett nodded. “But if they are ugly, I won’t really mind. All cats are pretty awesome, you know? Unless they’ve got a bad additude,” he paused to tap his finger on his chin, then he quickly brightened. “They’re kinda like people, you know? Anyone can be pretty, you just have to choose to be that way,” Brett sighed, then leaned back in his chair, holding Lady Tubbington snugly. After becoming bored, the cat began to paw at Brett’s neck, trying to alert him to something; apparently, Brett got the message, because he promptly retrieved a container of sprinkles from his messenger bag. The others occupying the area whispered a bit, and a couple of children stared, but some even ignored the fat cat casually lapping up sprinkles. Brett smiled knowingly, recognizing all too well the faces of strangers trying to hide their awkward expressions. He simply continued smiling lovingly at his cat, stroking her fluffy back, and occasionally glancing over at Ray. Soon enough, the occasionally turned into seconds at a time. Then, that turned into contemplating Ray’s hairstyles and thinking about his eyes. Brett decided that, after a long while of thinking, he’d had enough thinking for today. He blamed it on the sprinkle fumes or some other nonexistent force, then began to pack Lady’s treat up, mumbling incoherently. He exhaled deeply, repositioned his cat on his lap, then looked up at Ray… straight into his eyes. As he fought a blush creeping up over his face, he had only one thought: “God… the eyes.” Suddenly, he was saved by the announcement of, “Mr. Pierce?”
Ray sat awkwardly, looking over at Brett occasionally and meeting his eyes. It was strange; was Brett watching him? He sighed a bit, shifting in his seat as he twiddled his thumbs. Brett didn’t… like him. Did he? The blonde was always so hard to read. He constantly changed what he thought, and was always a little… random. But he was usually so upfront about his emotions; that was one of the things he was known best for. So, he couldn’t like Ray… right? But, if he didn’t, then why was he staring at Ray? He briefly considered that he had something on his face, or maybe he had said something and was waiting for an answer. But… that wasn’t it. He was looking at him with… curiosity in his eyes. It was… different. But Ray sort of… liked it. No one really payed any attention to Ray- save Katie, of course. But no one he… liked. Santiago had never really even given Ray the time of day, unless of course it was to insult him. It was… cool having Brett look at him like that. Like he mattered. He smiled at the taller boy, just as they were called into the office. “It’ll be okay.” Ray said, grabbing Brett’s hand again and biting his lip.
